You can get the gimp for windwos too. You also don’t need to buy “CuteFTP” you can easily use the windows built in one.

you do have a point there, but you forgot some major things:
Gimp is available on windows too, for free.
Windows dose come with a FTP client already, it’s called Windows Explorer in Vista, and just explorer in XP.
Another thing that many here already pointed out is that you got Filezilla and MANY other applications for FTP.
My personal favorite is WinSCP which allows me to transfer over SCP too, or SmartFTP which is also free.
also remember that most people buy their windows license with the pc, which in most cases(exceptions do happend) dose not allow them to remove the xp/vista license from the price.

While I do agree that one of the major upsides of Linux in general is the free software (I’m currently dual booting Ubuntu and Xp Pro), I would like to point out that many of the programs that you pointed out do not have to be bought simply because there are free alternatives.
Gimp has a Windows version, all it takes is a download (which may be part of point, but the same can be said for Linux apps). There is also Filezilla for ftp (also free). I don’t know about the others but I am sure that there are free programs for those activities as well.
Windows just makes different choices in its included software because people still pay for Windows. Windows is tailored to be open for general users that use it to do nothing more then surf the net and play games. Adding functions is your prerogative.

I think the title should be why Linux is better than Windows, your article talks about free open source software. these free software are not from Ubuntu. These free software can also be installed in Windows as well, if the open source supports windows

You can get everything on windows to for free.

Gimp is available for windows, there are free ftp clients, free video editors.

So I don’t really get the point of this post.

You do realize that you can also buy commercial software for Ubuntu?

Don’t get me wrong, I only use Ubuntu, hell I run a website about it, but this is a cheap shot.

And yes you’ve made a great point there. There are free products for Windows as well but I just mentioned the ones used predominantly by bloggers.

hmm lets see in realistic terms:
GIMP comes for windows as well. There is all the great paint.net cost for windows? $0
I agree with the video thing although in all fairness for any1 only using it to combine videos together windows movie maker is fine. $comes with windows
FTP: Hmm lots of free ones for windows as well, my fav is the ftp plugin for firefox. $0.

Yes open source is great but its not only linux that has open source products.
Total cost: $ however much windows costs, unless u bought a dell or someshit then its like wayyy cheaper. still linux wins on the cost thing but just.

Raskolnikov, I agree to you there.
Not to mention that if you have an old pc which is lying around somewhere in your garage you could easily make it your work computer by installing Xubuntu on it.
I have an old DELL with an 800 Mhz processor, 256 MB SD RAM and a 32MB video card.
I have to say Xubuntu brought it back to life and I can do almost anything on it

I’ll agree with you there, and add a few things. As of 8.04 my modest home computer (Athlon XP 3000+, 2GB pc2700, 128MB ATI Radeon 8500 All-In-Wonder, 120GB ATA100 drive hosting the OS) performs better than XP (ultra tweaked), everything is easier, AND I don’t have the “to buy or not to buy Vista” question looming with XP support coming to an end. It’s an all around better experience, and I honestly think most people would be happier with Ubuntu.
